PORTRAIT STUDIES OF NELSON MANDELA

English artist Harold Riley commissioned Giulio Giannini e Figlio to publish “Portrait Studies of Nelson Mandela,” a book containing preliminary sketches in addition to conversations between the two that took place when the South African leader sat to have his portrait.  Riley was the only artist for whom the Mandela ever posed.  The work was sold at auction in New York’s Rockefeller Center and the proceeds donated to build a school in South Africa through the Imibala Association. The special leather bound edition with a drawing of Mandela on the cover is limited to 50 numbered copies, created and signed by the artist.  The box containing the book is lined in Japanese silk and handcrafted marbled paper.
